Classroom jobs roster

Classroom jobs that go round the whole class

List your class jobs and your students, and FairTurns rotates the jobs each week so the popular ones go round. You run it; students are added by name and don’t need accounts.

Free, with no limit on people or dates. No card.

“Miss, I’ve never been line leader”

Class jobs are a lovely idea right up to week four. The pegs on the job chart get moved by whoever arrives first, two students have been messenger three times, and somebody has never once been line leader and has noticed. You’re trying to track it in your head between reading groups and the fruit break, and on Monday morning you can’t remember who had the plants last week.

A job chart only stays fair if somebody keeps count. FairTurns keeps the count for you: each week every job goes to a student who has had it least, and the whole class can see the list for the weeks ahead.

A teacher hands a watering can towards the classroom plants while students work at their desks in the background.

How FairTurns runs class jobs

Jobs as positions

Add a position for each job: Line leader, Messenger, Fruit bowl, Plants, Library tub, Lights and fans. Give two places to any job that needs a pair.

A Monday that stands for the week

Click the first Monday of term, set it for the school day, and choose “Every week on Monday”. That date holds the week’s jobs.

Popular jobs go round

Fill gives each job to the student who has had the fewest turns at that job, so line leader moves around the room rather than staying with the keen hands.

Students by name only

Paste your class list. Students need no email address and no account, and nothing is ever sent to them.

Jobs with limits

Limit a job to certain students if you need to: only those who can carry the library tub on the stairs, for example.

On the board

Open the public roster link on the classroom screen on Monday morning, or print the term and pin it by the door.

Pro

When you want it to run itself

Most teachers run class jobs on Free, since students are added by name and get no email. Pro becomes useful if a whole year level shares one organisation and teachers want the week’s roster emailed to them on a Monday morning.

A$1 a month per organisation, paid 1 to 5 years at a time. See Pro and pricing

Good to know

  • Six to ten jobs suits most primary classes of 24 to 28 students, with everyone getting a job every two or three weeks. Fewer jobs makes each one feel more special.
  • Students don’t pick their jobs: you set the jobs up and FairTurns rotates them. It’s a class roster, not a sign-up sheet.
  • Use first names or initials on the public link, since anyone with the link can see it. It never shows email addresses or who was away.
  • A student off for a week can be marked away by you, and Fill skips them. If they were already on a job, move that one by hand.

Questions

Do students need to log in?

Students are added by name only, with no email and no account. You run the roster, and the class sees it on the board, a printout or the public link.

Can I see how many turns each student has had?

Yes. The Turns booked chart beside Fill shows how many dates each student has, which is handy when someone says they never get a go.

A new student started this week. What do I do?

Add them to the class list, then run Redistribute. They are given jobs from the remaining weeks, with as few changes as possible, and you see each change before it’s made.

Can the whole year level share one roster?

Yes. Make one organisation with a team for each class. Each teacher can be a team moderator for their own class, and students only appear in their own class’s team.

Is there anything to pay?

Running class jobs is free, with no limit on students, jobs or weeks.
