Spell out what “clean” means
Most cleaning rosters fail on the word “kitchen”. One person thinks it means wiping the bench; the next thinks it means the fridge, the microwave and the floor. The What’s included column settles it once. Write it in plain words on the first row for each area, and copy it down.
Weekly areas
Kitchen, bins, meeting room. One person each per week, rotating.
Monthly jobs
The fridge clear-out, the microwave, the window sills. Give them their own row on the last week.
Not on the roster
Washing your own cup. Put a sign up for that instead of a name.
Keeping the rotation fair
The simplest fair rotation is a ladder: each week everyone moves down one area, and the bottom one goes to the top. With three people and three areas, everyone does everything once every three weeks. With more people than areas, some people have a week off, and the ladder makes sure the weeks off move round too.
Two things to watch. The kitchen is heavier than the meeting room, so check over a couple of months that nobody has collected more kitchen weeks than the others. And when someone is on leave, give their area to the person next due rather than to whoever happens to be at the desk.
Moving the cleaning roster online
At Kestrel Accounting the printed roster lasted until two people left in the same month. A live cleaning roster avoids the rewrite: in FairTurns each area becomes a position, the week becomes a repeating date (“Every week on Monday”), and Fill gives each area to whoever has had the fewest turns at it. People mark the weeks they’re away, and when the team changes, Redistribute shows who picks up which week before anything moves. One link shows everyone their week, on any phone. Free, whatever the size of the office.
Questions
Is there a cleaning rota template for a share house?
Yes. The house share cleaning rota template is set out for flatmates, with bins night and a weekly bathroom job.
How often should the cleaning roster rotate?
Weekly suits most workplaces. Daily jobs like the dishwasher can sit inside the weekly area, so one person owns the kitchen all week and nobody argues about whose day it was.
Can I add more areas?
Yes. Download for Excel or Sheets and add rows for each area, or print the page and write them into the blank rows. Keep it to the areas people actually share.
Should managers be on the cleaning roster?
If they use the kitchen, yes. A roster that leaves out senior staff is one people stop following quickly.
