Cleaning duty roster
A cleaning duty roster for the workplace that does its own
Not every workplace has cleaners. When the crew sweeps the floor and does the toilets themselves, FairTurns rotates the jobs through everyone and keeps the count, so the apprentices aren’t stuck with all of it.
Free, with no limit on people or dates. No card.
The apprentice always gets the broom
Redgum Joinery has nine people, a workshop full of sawdust, a lunchroom with a sandwich press and one toilet. There is no cleaner. For years the unwritten rule was that the youngest apprentice did the Friday sweep and the toilet, and the bins went out on Wednesday if somebody remembered. Then the apprentice finished his time, the new one complained, and the boss realised the rule had never been written down because it couldn’t be defended.
Small workplaces that clean for themselves need the jobs named, the turns rotated through everyone, and a record that shows it. That makes the toilet less personal. It is just this week’s turn, and the roster says whose.

How FairTurns runs cleaning duty at work
The jobs, by name
Lunchroom, Bins and Friday clean are teams on one calendar. The Friday clean has two positions, Floor and Toilets, so two people share it.
Rotated through everyone
Fill gives each job to whoever has done it least. The leading hand takes a turn at the toilet too.
Jobs held by the trained
If the dust extractor needs emptying by someone trained, make it a position and limit it to them. Nobody else is put on it.
Fair count on the wall
The Turns booked chart shows how many jobs each person has had. Print it with the roster if people want proof.
People with no email
Add the crew by name only. They are rostered and printed like anyone else, and get no email.
Leave and site days
Someone on site all next week is marked away for a stretch, and Fill puts somebody else on.
Set it up
- 01
Make the teams
Create the business as an organisation, with teams for Lunchroom, Bins and Friday clean.
- 02
List the jobs
Give each team its positions, such as Floor and Toilets on the Friday clean, one person each.
- 03
Add the crew
Paste the names in one go; email addresses are optional.
- 04
Set the days
Click Friday, set 2:30 till 3:30, choose “Every week on Friday”, and add the daily and Wednesday jobs.
- 05
Fill and pin it up
Press Fill for the next 3 months and print the month for the lunchroom wall.
When you want it to run itself
Invite the crew by email and Pro sends each person a reminder before their cleaning turn, plus the month’s roster on the day you choose. Anyone who will be off site replies “I can’t make it”, and the next person in line is put on and asked.
A$1 a month per organisation, paid 1 to 5 years at a time. See Pro and pricing
Good to know
- Put the job in the team or position name. A date holds a name and a time, not a checklist, so “Toilets: clean, restock paper, empty bin” works better than a separate list.
- Keep the worst job short and weekly. Shared by nine people, a weekly toilet clean comes round to each person about once every two months.
- The crew don’t pick their own jobs. The roster puts people on, and they mark the days they’re away or off site.
- Hazardous cleaning, such as chemicals or extraction systems, still needs its own procedure and training. Limit those jobs to the people trained for them.
Questions
Can the boss and office staff be on the roster too?
Yes. Add everyone who uses the lunchroom. Fill doesn’t care about job titles, only about who has had the fewest turns.
Some jobs need a trained person. Can I restrict them?
Yes. Limit a person to certain positions and Fill only puts them on those. Anyone without limits can do every job.
We already have a cleaner twice a week. Do we need this?
It helps for the gaps in between: the lunchroom on the cleaner’s days off, the bins, the end-of-week sweep. Roster just those jobs.
Can I print it for the lunchroom?
Yes. Print the month from the calendar, or share the public roster link with the crew’s group chat.
Is the cleaning roster free?
Yes, with no limit on people or jobs. Pro, for the reminder emails, is A$1 a month for the business.
